I feel like I need a rolodex of images like the one to the left. Those images that speak to me, have meaning, and I want to refer to and share. Too often I see something, I say YES...and then I get caught up in my day to day and forget that I wanted to remember!
Ok, maybe I do not need a rolodex...perhaps a folder for these types of images that I look at when I am reflecting and planning. Back to the task at hand! Thinking about how I build upon the conditions that support innovation. I'd have to say I add two things. Those are building relationships and listening.
I have learned over the years that I will get nowhere if I do not get to know the people I am working with first. I truly like getting to know people, but there are occasions when my introvert self has had enough of the getting to know you sessions. When I feel that way, I have to stop and just remember to listen. To listen with intent. To listen to what is being said, and what is not being said.
Once the listening is complete. Well, the listening is never complete. After a round of listening, I try to pose questions in order to learn more and to help move the person or group of people I am working with. This, I think, helps build trust...and trust is imperative especially when asking educators to do something that they are uncomfortable with or is new to them.
By no means am I am expert at any of these notions. I continue to refine how I support...and I learn, and I learn, and I grow each day.
